About the San Francisco SQL Server User Group
The San Francisco SQL Server User Group maintains a focus on database development and administration practices specifically centered around Microsoft SQL Server. Presentations include developer centric interactive sessions as well as demonstrations of related products that have been judged to have potential value or be of interest to the professional database community. The intent is also to provide a face to face forum for peer learning and networking within the context of SQL Server. Members include DBAs, application developers long experienced using SQL Server, FoxPro or Access as a backend data source for custom business systems, as well as developers migrating to the Microsoft .NET platform.

June Meeting - Wednesday, June 11, 2008
At our June meeting, Ross Mistry will give us a jumpstart on how to harden a SQL Server 2008 implementation. SQL Server is regularly targeted by hackers as it is a repository of sensitive data for organizations. If breached, hackers can gain access to confidential information, including credit card numbers, social security numbers, or marketing information. This presentation will cover topics pertaining to best practices on how to secure and harden a SQL Server 2008 implementation when running on Windows Server 2008. Some of the following security and hardening topics will be covered; using database encryption, leveraging Policy-Based Management, implementing enhanced auditing techniques, using SQL Server configuration tools to minimize attack surface, which authentication method should be utilized, enforcing strong passwords, using SQL Server security logs, creating policies and linking them in Active Directory, verifying security with Microsoft Security Baseline Analyzer and installing Windows and SQL Server Service Packs. Speaker: Ross Mistry is a partner and principal consultant at Convergent Computing located in the San Francisco bay area. As a lead architect, Ross design and implements SQL Server, Active Directory and Exchange solution for fortune 500 organizations. He is a co-author on SQL Server 2005 Management & Administration and Windows Server 2008 Unleashed. Ross frequently speaks at international conferences around the world such as SQL Server PASS and Dev Connections. Ross is currently working on his latest title, SQL Server 2008 Management & Administration – Mastering the Database Engine, which is scheduled for release in fall of 2008. April Meeting - Wednesday, April 9, 2008
At our April meeting, Denise McInerney of Intuit, will talk about Transaction Management. Lost or corrupted data can have a direct impact on customers and the success of the business, therefore protecting data integrity is one of the primary responsibilities of a DBA. Denise will discuss how to successfully protect your organization’s data by understanding and practicing effective transaction management. She’ll discuss: How transactions work in SQL Server Options for transaction management SQL Server isolation levels Tips for effective DBA/Developer partnerships
Speaker: Denise McInerney is a Sr. Database Developer/DBA at Intuit and has over ten years experience as a SQL Server DBA. Denise’s focus is design and performance tuning OLTP databases that support web-based applications. She’s an MCDBA and an MCTS in SQL Server 2005 and is the Chairperson for PASS Women in Technology.
